Neo-Ren buildings
Neo-Renaissance architecture in Prague emerged in the second half of the 19th century during the Czech National Revival. Architects revived Renaissance principles—symmetry, classical orders (columns, pilasters), pediments, and rich ornamentation—while often adding local historicist touches. Many buildings feature elaborate sgraffito decoration, a technique in which layers of differently colored plaster are applied to the facade; while the surface layer is still workable, designs are scratched through it to reveal the contrasting color beneath. This creates durable, intricate murals depicting history, mythology, or allegory without relying on paint.
