Trg dr. Franje Tuđmana sits on part of the former Rudolf Barracks grounds, a late-19th-century military complex that once marked Zagreb's western edge. After most of the complex was cleared in 1978, the area gradually became public parkland, and part of it was named for Franjo Tuđman, Croatia's first president, in 2006.
